The Beginner's Guide to Seed Starting - Supplies You'll Need

First things first -  You don’t need a complicated setup to start cut flowers from seed. A few basic supplies will get you through the season, and you can always add more tools as your garden grows. We've linked some great sources below for each that can be found and delivered quickly through Amazon. You can also find these at your local garden supply store.

Quality Flower Seeds

Choose fresh seeds from a trusted source for the best germination rates.

Seed Starting Soil Mix

A lightweight seed-starting mix is ideal for germination. It drains well, holds moisture evenly, and helps prevent damping off.

Containers with Drainage Holes

These can be seed trays. cell packs, or even reused containers, as long as water can drain freely.

Drainage Tray

Used for bottom watering, which helps keep seeds in place and encourages strong root growth.

Humidity Dome

Helps retain moisture during germination, especially in dry indoor environments.

Heat Mat (optional)

Helps speed up germination, particularly if your seed-starting space is cool. I use heat mats with thermostats so I can control the temperature more precisely.

Grow Lights

Helps retain moisture during germination, especially in dry indoor environments.

Plant Labels

Trust me. Seedlings all look the same at first. Labeling trays as you go will save a lot of guesswork later.
