As the growing season draws to a close, the real work of growing dahlia begins. While these magnificent blooms may have finished their show for the year, the tubers they leave behind are the secret to next spring.

A WORKSHOP ON DAHLIA TUBERS

This workshop is an opportunity to join us on the farm for a hands-on demonstration of the part of the dahlia growing process.

Together, we will move through the rows and learn the process of preserving these garden treasures. We will guide you through the process from the first frost to the last, ensuring your favorite varieties are kept safe, healthy, and ready to multiply.

In our time together, we'll explore:

THE HARVEST

How to safely lift dahlia clumps from the earth without disturbing the delicate "necks" of the tubers.

THE ART OF THE DIVISION

A patient, step-by-step look at how to identify the "eyes" and divide large clumps into several new plants for the coming year.

CLEANING AND CURING

Our thoughtful methods for washing and drying tubers to prevent rot and prepare them for their long slumber.

WINTER STORAGE

A study of the best storage techniques to keep your tubers plump and viable until spring.

You will leave with the quiet confidence to manage your own dahlia collection and perhaps even a few divisions of our farm favorites to start your journey.

PREPARATION FOR THE FARM

A Pair of Garden Snips: While we have tools on hand, many find it helpful to practice with their own favorite bypass pruners or snips.

Comfortable Garden Gloves: We suggest a pair that allows for a bit of dexterity, as dahlia eyes can be quite small and delicate.

A Notebook and Pen: You may want to jot down a few "field notes" or variety names as we move through the rows together.

A Harvest Apron or Gardening Clothes: We’ll be working closely with the earth, so please wear something you don't mind getting a little dusty.

Sturdy, Closed-Toe Shoes: Farm paths can be uneven; we recommend comfortable boots or sneakers.

A Sun Hat and Water Bottle: Even on a gentle morning, the Tennessee sun can be bright. We want you to stay comfortable and hydrated while we work.

This gathering is kept small to ensure everyone has a chance to practice these techniques hands-on. We look forward to sharing this peaceful morning with you.
